What does a mobile paediatric OT service look like?

Uncategorized

When you think about therapy what picture takes form in your mind?  Most people will describe a clinic setting but for a mobile therapist this is not where therapy happens.

A mobile OT might visit:

  • Home
  • Daycare
  • School
  • The local park or playground
  • The community library
  • Shopping centres

Why?

Because this is where life happens.  Seeing a child operating in their usual environment allows us to see:

  • What’s working well
  • How the environment supports or challenges their participation
  • What demands are on the child and their significant support people at the time of the task in question

AND it allows us to:

  • Collaborate with the people who are currently supporting the child within the environment in question
  • Develop practical strategies that are tailored to the child’s unique situation
  • Help a child to practise their skills in real-world situations

Whether it’s practising dressing skills in the bedroom, supporting classroom participation at school, or building confidence at a local playground, therapy happens where learning naturally occurs.
