Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about referrals, appointments and mobile occupational therapy.

How often will my child need therapy?

There is no automatic frequency. Support may be weekly, fortnightly, a short block, occasional consultation or a focused assessment, depending on goals and family capacity.

Where do sessions take place?

Appointments may take place at home, school, childcare or an agreed community location. The setting is chosen according to the goal and practical arrangements.

What happens in the first appointment?

The occupational therapist gathers information about strengths, routines, concerns and priorities, then recommends goals and next steps.

Do I need a referral?

A referral is usually not required for private occupational therapy. Some funding pathways or Medicare programs require specific documentation.

Does my child need a diagnosis?

No. Occupational therapy can be based on functional concerns and participation goals. A diagnosis may provide context but is not always necessary to begin an assessment.

Can you see my child at school?

Yes, where the school agrees and a school visit is clinically useful. Parent consent is required, and support may include observation, consultation or environmental recommendations.
